The first “R”, Regret. Whenever we talk about regret, we are talking about the past. Regret is about something you did NOT do that you wish you WOULD HAVE done. The thinking behind regret usually sounds something like this: “My life would have been so much better had I…”, OR “My life would have been so much different had I not…”
The second “R”, Rejection. Rejection usually applies to the past, but can also describe a present feeling state. It might sound like this: “I feel rejected because my father/mother didn’t show me love” OR “I feel rejected because my husband wants to divorce me.” Rejection describes a state where you feel unloved, excluded and/or separate.
The third “R”, Resentment. Like rejection, resentment can refer to the past or present. It describes the way you currently feel about something that happened in the past or about the way you perceive someone treating you in the present. It might sound like this: “I resent my mother for favoring my sister and treating her more special than me”, OR “I resent the way my spouse talks down to me and treats me like I am not good enough.” Resentment usually centers around the belief that someone hurt you, betrayed you, or doesn’t meet your expectation of how you think they should treat you. Very often, resentment is a chain to the past.
